It’s difficult to know what to lead with on an about yourself page. What is the thing about my life that sums it up the best?
When you are a child it is your age (usually in years and months):
My name is Kathryn and I am 27 years old.
When a child is a bit older they may define themselves by their friends or maybe their pets:
My best friend is Andi Farr, and we are sad as we have no pets.
Where as a student will start with what they are studying and where:
I studied Film at Cumbria Institute of the Arts (now University of Cumbria) and graduated in 2006.
Or maybe where they come from:
I was born in Ashington, Northumberland and I currently reside in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Sometimes people tell you about their hobbies:
My hobbies are eating and making food, and hopefully writing about that reguarly on this blog! I also enjoy watching films and visiting craft markets.
A family-oriented person may define themselves by their family members and a career-oriented person may define themselves by their job, but in my experience, you should generally wait to be asked about these subjects - rather than lead a conversation with them!
But my favourite introductions of people are when you start with their likes and dislikes, like in the film Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. So here are mine, à la Amélie …
I like: -
Falling over in the snow.
Scaring people while they are vacuuming.
Pulling feathers out my pillow.
Hanging out washing in the morning, and not bothering to put on any shoes because the grass looks dry, finding out it isn’t, and feeling the dewy grass beneath my feet - then leaving wet footprints on the patio.
I dislike: -
Dropping a roll of foil so it unravels for ages.
Laughing so hard that whatever I’m drinking comes out my nose. Funny yes, but it burns.
